Seems to have been abandoned and looks dehydrated but otherwise fine. Probably five to six weeks old, I think. We waited but mother never came for him.
So..I have a 2-year-old, a dog, a cat, and two rats. So..I’m wondering if I can or should take on the care of this little creature. The wild animal rehab places here in Oregon won’t raise him because these squirrels are not native to the area. So..they will put him to sleep if I bring him in! Anyway..they strongly suggested I NOT try and raise him myself because of various things: parasites and the fact that they can be aggressive towards humans when grown…and the fact it might not be safe with my small child around. My plan was to raise him till he was older/stronger and then just turn him loose. Bad idea? Any thoughts on what I was told about warnings? I’m especially worried about parasites since I JUST got a bad flea problem under control with my dog.
Any thoughts? I don’t know what to do!
Update: I found someone who had experience raising these babies and getting back into the wild. She picked him up yesterday and sounds like so far he is doing well. Yes… I know it is illegal to have raise these non-native squirrels..but so far the squirrel police have not knocked on my door…so guess I got away with that for one day. Whew!!!
