What do you do when your corrections don’t work?

I have a 15 mo. old APBT mix that continues to struggle with behaving on walks. She does a fabulous job of “heeling” if there are no other distractions around. She used to really go nuts if we saw a cat or squirrel, but that’s under control now. Now the only problem we are having is with other dogs. If the other dog is minding it’s own business we’re fine. But if the other dog starts barking and getting excited, my dog is right back to her lunging and pulling and barking. Currently I am using a prong collar and I have been taught by a trainer how to use it for corrections (different dog), but she is totally oblivious to it at this point. On occasion I’ve nudged her with my foot to get her attention and it seems to work, but I don’t know if this is ok.

I would appreciate any input or tips, I know there are quite a few very experienced trainers on here. I am willing to hire a trainer again to work specifically on this issue but I would prefer to try and work on it on my own if at all possible.

Thanks for your help!

What is this dog – she’s a 50-50 mix – of what?

She is my curent icon picture, and can be viewed better on my 360 page. We were told what she is – a 50-50 mix, but we sometimes have doubts about what her linneage may really be. She’s 34lbs, 20″ at the shoulder, great friendly personality, no excessive barking, but will bark at strangers. She loves to sniff out where the squirrels have been, and so desperately wants to catch one! So – what are your thoughts? What is she?
Her tail is docked.
More info- Shadie was one of 7 in the litter. At 12 weeks old, her spots were almost non-existant. One litter mate was very similar to Shadie. Three had the black mask and ears like Shadie, but had already developed spots of varying sizes. Two littermates were TOTALLY BROWN, and significantly smaller in size (with a very JR look).
Thanks everyone! The pet store said she is a Jack Russel & Beagle mix. But all the pictures I’ve seen of a “Jack-a bee” don’t look like her at all. We agree she’s half JR! And most of you think her other half is a spaniel or border colie? It could definately fit. I’m sending this to public vote – I’d all give you ten points if I could. Thanks.

What to do about my dog? He keeps catching small critters and it’s bringing me down. How can I stop it?

He is a sweet, lovable basset/beagle mix named Frank. He plays in the fenced back yard with my shih tzu/laso mix (Fred). He’s always chasing after squirrels, birds, and a rabbit here and there. He never catches them because he has super short legs (it’s kind of funny looking)-until recently, that is. In Feb. he caught a squirrel and just mauled it. Blood everywhere. I don’t particulary care for squirrels, but I love animals for the most part and this was really sad. I felt so bad for the squirrel. Well, now when I was on the phone, I heard a weird squeaking noise in the back yard. Didn’t think too much about it. Got off the phone to find out Frank caught and killed a baby bunny. Not real small, but definately not full grown. They have made a den under a wood pile in my neighbor’s yard and run past Frank frequently on the other side of the fence. I KNOW it’s in his nature to hunt, but it’s just so upsetting. What can I do to keep the little critters out?http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=viewImage&friendID=146152308&albumID=2679488&imageID=22365229

What should I do with a pulling dog?

We own a 50lb black lab mix that is 2 years old. He isn’t as big as a full lab, but still extremely strong.

He does really well when we walk until he sees a squirrel, another dog, etc. When sees something of that sort he pulls us with him. It is very hard to control him and hard to train him to not pull since he is super strong.

Right now, we use a regular collar that doesn’t have the plastic clip, but a metal buckle so he can’t get out of the collar during a walk that looks like this one

http://www.petco.com/product/107432/PETCO-Single-Ply-Nylon-Dog-Collars-in-Red.aspx

and we just use a regular single ply 6ft leash.

we are planning to buy one of these:

http://www.petco.com/product/102495/Premier-Gentle-Leader-Easy-Walk-Black-Harness-For-Dogs.aspx

since it was recommended to use at a “getting to know your dog” type of class.

is there any other method or way to help his pulling? and is the harness a good idea or will it not work?

we don’t want to spend a bunch of money on it right now because money situations and such.

thanks for your help!!
It is kinda hard to “stop” my dog from going somewhere even if I am holding him by the collar, which I sometimes end up having to do.

So by “walking in the other direction” or “coming to a complete stop” is extremely hard because he’ll drag me with him due to his strength.
