Hello everyone, though my question might sound rather awkward to you, let me explain. I’ve visited many countries, and all of them were home to large and magnificent mammal fauna. My island/country on the other hand is home to bats, the only native mammal. The other native mammal, the giant rice rat went extinct in 1881. We’re also home to the Red rumped agouti (introduce 25, 000 years ago by Amerindians), Black eared opossum (introduced 25, 000 years ago by Amerindians), feral pigs (introduced in the 16 th century by european settlers), small asian mongoose (introduced in the late 19 the century by the British to control the rat population). LOL, I also forgot the brown rat, black rat, and house mouse. Other than the agouti, and the opossum, the other animals are very destructive and invasive. The opossum and agouti have been on the island for so long that they’ve adapted to it and found their own niches. On the other hand, the more recent animals cause trouble. I just feelr ather disatisfied with the mammal fauna, because of:
1. Most of them are not native.
2. I never see them. Most of them are nocturnal.
3. Those which have been on the island for the longest are quite rare due to human encroachment on their territory and predation by dogs etc..
Is this justified, or am I just overreacting? Though, I did like to see deer running about in the countries I’ve visited. And those squirrels. hehe.
