Actually, it doesn’t prove what you claim. The fox and gray squirrels buries their nuts, individually. The red squirrel keeps a horde of nuts, above ground. The squirrel in the video is a gray. Also, the other problem here is that in winter, those cups would be covered by up to 1-2 feet of snow. Hard to find by remembering how it looked prior, don’t ya think?

I work for the DHSS. we gave a number of job seekers a signing on card and for years and years after they kept coming back without fail. Its true humans also have a very good memory given the right incentive.. substitute nuts for dole cheque. we should compare notes!

Do you folks at the DHSS poke fun at the disabled as well? Or the jobless suicidal? You’re lucky to be in work. A lot of people are destitute. I wouldn’t mock those who are low in spirit.

  8. Cool.
But why do you keep pronouncing “nuts” as “knots” and “cups” as “cops”? Got confused in the beginning =)

I don’t work for the DHSS! It was a joke!! Don’t take things so seriously. The point is, there are people who couldn’t be bothered to work and are inventive and cunning as your squirrel friend.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. Being in an area literally plagued with squirrels and trying to do our damndest to foil their attempts at robbing and destroying bird feeders, it has become quite evident at how surprisingly adept they are at solving puzzles and turning “squirrel proof” into “free buffet”. Their is one particular one who even scouts out our windows to make sure what’s going on in the house before he raids the feeders. And soon as he sees anyone with a rifle, he’s out of there.

Thats how english people pronounce it, simple. Or if this guy is not english, then well, it definately looks like England, so he learnt english there.

  15. Did the squirrel have a primary association with the smell or nuts, or the smell of the human hand and the nuts placed under the cup? In additon to the location?

Try wearing gloves when you do the experiments too.

  16. they use smell aswell cause the squirel hesitated before going to the red cup

  22. Great video! Thanks. I also do not believe in evolution. Too much design involved. My late father experimented with our local blue jay (scrub jay) population. Weighed 4
peanuts and set them out. All the jays picked each one up one by one and chose the heaviest one the vast majority of the time. They would come back and keep choosing the next heaviest until they were gone. Accident or design?

There are 5 cups and he is heading to the second one from the left. So he is kind of counting in it’s own way of math.
Or is he just heading to where that particular cup is and not even avare of the other cups?

To proove that you can add one more cup to the left and see if he goes to the second one from the left or the third one.
If he goes to the second one, that means he counts. But if he goes to the third one from the left, that d be phenomenal.
