Mostly interested in something to accompany me on squirrel or rabbit hunting trips. Not looking to break the bank. Doesn’t matter to me if it is a revolver not. Thanks in advance for the suggestions.

I’d use a ruger single six or a 8″ Dan Wesson in 22. I also like the Browning takedown 22 Semi Auto rifle.

There are no good hand guns for shooting (animals). Hand guns are specifically designed for shooting people. Get a rifle or shotgun.

No good handguns for hunting? The nerve of some people! As if .44mags with 10 inch barrels were made to kill people and not game, get real!!!
I dont know what caliber your looking for but I’m assuming small since your hunting small game. I have three .22mag revolvers that I got out of the classifieds in the newspaper. Not a single one cost me more than $100, they are old but they work just fine!
Just remember, the longer the barrel the more accurate it is.

To the guy who said handguns are not for hunting; Hunting handguns are NOT made for shooting people! Jeppers! You don’t need a 44 magnum with a 320gr bullet for personal defence and it would not be very good for combat.
Anyways I agree with the single six, the Mark 3, Mark 1 or mark 2, by Ruger, also Browning makes some fine .22 pistols as do many other companies.
I prefer the semi-auto .22’s as they are faster to reload with the magazine. And evo is right the longer the barrel the better for accuracy.
I have an old Ruger mark 2 that I can shoot a grouse or rabbit in the head at 25 feet every time. I just bought a Ruger 22/45 for the wife and she can also make head shots on small game at 25 feet. I have taken small game out to 30 yards with my mark 2.
I would advise you find what fits your hand and feels right to you as all those pistols and revolvers have different size grips.
New Ruger semi-auto pistols go for under $300 new for the standard models and can be had for much less used.

Do you mean you want a handgun to hunt squirrel and rabbit, or a handgun to have along with you when you go to hunt squirrel and rabbit with your rifle? If the former something in a .22, I’d say a long barrel Ruger mark series. Lots of addons, accurate, and fun to shoot. For the latter, something larger depending on your reason for carrying. Concerned about two-legged predators? Go with a .357 magnum. For big 4-legged threats I’d carry something larger like a .44 magnum.

If you are actually hunt with the pistol I think I would look at Thompson Encor single shot break down. This is what I hunt deer and turkey with. I guess you could hunt rabbits and squirrels with it also. They are a little costly usually around $600 but that gives you 2 weapons to hunt with. The most typical barrel size is 22-250 and a 7mm08. I can hold an 1 1/2″ group at 100 yards with my 7mm08 and about a 1″ group with the 22-250 at 50 yards. The only reason I don’t do well with the 22-250 at 100 yards is the scope is only 2x and it’s just to hard to see the target. I have a 2.5×8 on th 7mm08. You never know you may enjoy this weapon so much that you may do all your hunting with it. You can always add more barrels later up to 50 caliber.

What you want to carry is a Contender single shot pistol with a 45LC barrel – this barrel also happens to shoot 410 shotshells very well. Some models come with a choke to add a bit more range. This is the best of all worlds – you get a 410 shotgun and the ability to throw a 45LC round – just about as powerful as a 44mag – my friend has taken a black bear with one round using a 45LC.
I had one of these pistols with a 10″ barrel. The 10″ barrel is the perfect length for grouse. The longer barrels would be fine is this was going to become your primary firearm. Since the barrels only take a minute to swap – hey – try them all and see which length you like best.
I liked by 45LC/410 barrel so much I took up reloading 410 shot shells just for it. Way too much fun to shoot.
